The purpose of an initiatic teaching is to enable human beings to change, to transform themselves. But you must know what can be transformed in you and what cannot. Indeed, you can change your character but not your temperament. Your temperament is in some way the result of your previous lives, in that in the past you have linked up, by way of your thoughts, your feelings and your actions, to certain forces, which now determine your subconscious, in other words your temperament. And there is very little you can change about this, just as you cannot change your skeletal system or your muscular system; these elements also make up your temperament. Even though in nature everything changes or is able to change through the omnipotence of thought and will, these changes are so slow and imperceptible that they can be said to be non-existent in one incarnation. Our character, however, is determined by us. We forge it by our efforts and our spiritual direction. Whatever our temperament, we have the power to control certain tendencies that are detrimental to our evolution and at the same time allow qualities we already possess to develop.
