No matter what moral philosophy and religion have to say, …

No matter what moral philosophy and religion have to say, it is impossible to forget yourself and think only of others. Instead, you must think of yourself in a new way, until this thought takes a form as disinterested and generous as the sun. Yes, pose this question to the sun: ‘O you who illuminate all creatures, who warm and vivify them, do you really think only of them?’ The sun will answer: ‘Not at all! It is for myself that I distribute my blessings to all creatures, because it gives me joy. And I don’t endlessly ask myself whether they deserve all that I give them. It doesn’t matter to me. I leave them free and in peace. If I continue to give them light and warmth, it is because it gives me pleasure.’ So you see, even the sun agrees that we must concern ourselves with others, yes, but for our own advancement, our own joy.
