Libra, one of the constellations of the Zodiac, is a reflection of cosmic balance, of the equilibrium between the two opposing but complementary principles through which the universe came into being and continues to exist. But ‘balance’ does not mean a cessation of oscillations, a state in which the two pans of the scales remain perfectly still. Perfect balance would not only mean stagnation but a return to an original, undifferentiated state. As long as creation is not complete, the cosmic scales continue to swing. Their movement shows that creation is forever evolving, striving towards absolute equilibrium and therefore absolute immobility, but without ever achieving it. When it is attained, everything will return once more to the womb of the Eternal.
