Our life is merely a process of perpetual combustion. Even when we think or speak, we burn certain substances in our organism. And it is even more the case where the emotions are concerned: a shock, a great sorrow or even a great joy is a kind of combustion which produces dross, ash, and we must then rest or sleep so that our organism has the chance to recuperate. Every manifestation, every sensation, every emotion is an expenditure of matter and energy. How, then, can we make men and women conscious of all they lose in the effervescence of passion and sensuality? It is precisely in this that their expenditures are the greatest and their recuperation the most difficult. This is how people burn their subtle, spiritual quintessence and eventually lose their intelligence, their sensitivity and their beauty.
