As long as human beings stay outside of God, they do not know Him. In order to understand the immensity of God we must merge with Him, lose ourselves in Him, fuse with Him. But this fusion cannot occur unless we work at purifying ourselves. Let us use the image of a large drop of mercury: you spread it in tiny droplets over a sheet of paper and then you push the droplets back together and they form one big drop again. You have no doubt all carried out this experiment. Now sprinkle some dust on the tiny droplets spread out all over the sheet of paper. Whatever you do to bring them back together again, they remain separate. Well, this is what happens with us. The Lord is splendour, light, immensity, and to come closer to Him we must eliminate all these impurities which, like the dust, prevent fusion from taking place.
