A person who is guilty of wrongdoing will sooner or later …

A person who is guilty of wrongdoing will sooner or later fall victim to the disorder he has created within himself. He may believe himself to be very powerful and able to do whatever he likes with peace of mind. But his evil actions are inscribed in his conscience, and sooner or later they will come to assail him, and his peace will be destroyed. Even a magus, who commands the whole of nature and is obeyed by the spirits, cannot escape this law, because there is no power in existence capable of appeasing a man tormented by the feeling of guilt. You must therefore count only upon your upright and honest actions. As soon as you transgress a law, you lose your powers, and they are restored to you only if you are able to rectify your faults. True magi distinguish themselves from ordinary human beings in that they are quick to redress their mistakes. It is in this that their power lies: in their ability to redress. If you fail to correct your errors, your power is insufficient to appease your conscience, but by correcting them, you act indirectly on your conscience and are once again at peace.
