Salt is part of our daily meals. It is considered perfectly …

Salt is part of our daily meals. It is considered perfectly natural to place it on the table alongside water and bread. But how many stages the history of salt has passed through since it first appeared in that primordial ocean from which land gradually emerged! We cannot separate salt from our origins. It is vital to us. It not only gives flavour to our food, it also preserves it. But do you think about salt when you use it during cooking or at the table? You taste the food a little to see whether you have added enough, but it’s your tongue that decides; your mind is elsewhere. But don’t you think it’s time you deciphered this letter that God sends you through the intermediary of salt? What a long journey it’s made, emerging from the sea and being dried by the sun, before reaching your home and table! And now that it’s about to enter your body, you should study its symbolic meaning by meditating on Jesus’ words: ‘You are the salt of the earth.’
