Our inner difficulties are analogous to a swamp. For as …

Our inner difficulties are analogous to a swamp. For as long as the swamp is not drained, we live in fog and are assailed by mosquitoes, because the swamp provides the best conditions for them to proliferate. Our life then becomes nothing but an endless struggle against fog and mosquitoes. When you see certain people struggling for years with the same insoluble problems, displaying the same inner unrest and complaining about the same things every day, you would like to help them free themselves, but how? You talk to them, you explain to them that the external situation will not change, that it’s up to them to change, but it’s no good; they remain in their swamp with their mosquitoes. This happens to a greater or lesser degree, of course, but each one of us has swamps to drain and fill, so that the mosquitoes – our anxieties and suffering – can no longer live there.
