Our physical body is made of matter, and because matter is …

Our physical body is made of matter, and because matter is subject to time, it wears away and disintegrates. This is what we call ageing. Wrinkles, grey hair and rheumatism are among the obvious signs of this process, which we are obviously not pleased to observe. But we are not merely a physical body, and while the body’s ageing falls in the natural order of things, inwardly we are in no way forced to age along with it. So there is really nothing to worry about! In general, people who are distressed by the marks of ageing they see daily in the mirror are already inwardly old. Instead of concentrating on maintaining what is warm and alive in themselves – their heart – they identify with their body, with matter. But it is their heart, not their body, that makes them young or old, and if their heart ages, it is because they have allowed it to do so. To avoid growing old, you must preserve your love for people and things. You must never lose your interest and curiosity in the rich, abundant life around you.
