It is written that on Judgment Day, humans will be divided: …

It is written that on Judgment Day, humans will be divided: the good will be seated at the right hand of God and enter into His kingdom, and the wicked will be placed on His left hand and cast into everlasting fire. ‘How cruel!’ you will say. ‘Has the Lord no mercy?’ The truth is that the Lord would much rather everyone were at his right hand, in happiness and fulfilment. But Mother Nature also has to be reckoned with, and she knows no mercy. Just and implacable, she says, ‘I can do nothing with such drab, warped material. Let it be sent back to the foundry and melted down again.’ And from the results of this recasting, she creates wonderful things: pearls, stars, even whole worlds. There is no meanness in her. What do jewellers do? Armed with a magnifying lens and other tools of the trade, they examine gems and say ‘This diamond is perfect. That one is flawed and not of the first water’ and set it aside; they sort them. Everywhere, in every field, whether it be the fruits of the earth or raw materials, human beings sort and grade things. Why should Nature not do the same with humans?
