Now that there is an effort to offer everyone an education, …

Now that there is an effort to offer everyone an education, we are forced to admit that this education very often leads to confusion and rebellion. How is it that knowledge or intellectual development, which are nonetheless good things, are at the origin of so many confrontations and misfortunes? In reality, it is not knowledge which is the cause, but the nature of that knowledge. To educate people is to open their eyes, and the first thing their eyes see are social inequalities and injustice: they are poor and weak, and other people are rich and powerful; and so, of course, what is awakened in them are rebellion and a desire for vengeance. They want all kinds of things they had not thought about before because they were not even aware of their existence; and since they have no idea of how to obtain them, they set about it the most direct way, through violence. You will say, 'But then should we keep them in ignorance and darkness?' Not at all! We must simply reflect on the nature of the knowledge that is given to human beings and, whether they be already educated or ignorant, present them with knowledge that will develop the aspirations of the soul and spirit.
