Snakes travel in a sinusoidal movement. Light also travels a sinusoidal course. This is why initiates use the image of a snake to illustrate what is this magical agent, this universal medium through which waves propagate through space and which they call astral light. This agent is itself neutral. It merely performs the function of transmitting, and transmits good as well as evil. The astral serpent thus has a double nature, both luminous and dark, and it is in order to express this double nature that initiates have twined two serpents around the caduceus. They represent the positive and negative current of astral light. The first is luminous and warm, the second is dark and cold; one is white, the other is black. There are two aspects to the serpent, but the serpent is unique. We must conquer its bad aspects, and once we have conquered these, the serpent begins to serve us by giving us its energies. But first we must master the serpent.
