The sephirotic Tree teaches us that God works with the two powers of mercy and severity. In the same way, if a teacher is to be useful and effective, he must know how to be lenient at certain times and strict at others. Take the example of a spiritual master. Even though he feels a great deal of compassion and love for people, he must also know how to show severity for the sake of his disciples’ progress and development. And if the disciples do not accept this severity, they do not belong in an initiatic school. A master needs workers for heaven, and you cannot become a good worker for heaven unless you submit to discipline. The disciple who is reprimanded by a master because he has behaved badly must put his sensibilities aside and show strength of character. When he does so, his master can count on him for divine work.
