To the doctor of law who asked: ‘Master, which commandment …

To the doctor of law who asked: ‘Master, which commandment is the greatest of all?’ Jesus responded: ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ By ‘mind’ we are to understand intellect, and by ‘strength’ we are to understand spirit, for only the spirit in us has true strength. We must therefore love God with our heart, our intellect, our soul and our spirit, in other words with the four principles which make up our psychic world. We all possess these four principles, but merely by possessing them do we love God as Jesus asks us to? No, for these same instruments rust if we do not learn to maintain them, to work on them. This is why we must meditate on the precept of Master Peter Deunov: ‘Have a heart as pure as crystal, a mind as luminous as the sun, a soul as vast as the universe and a spirit as powerful as God and one with God.’ The purity of the heart, the light of the intellect, the immensity of the soul and the power of the spirit… it is by working on these virtues that we come to truly love God.
