When people say, ‘I am happy because...', the mere fact …

When people say, ‘I am happy because...', the mere fact that they give a reason for their happiness indicates they do not know what true happiness is. Because true happiness has no cause. Yes, you are happy, but you do not know why. You think it is marvellous to be alive, to breathe, to eat, to speak, and you do not know why. Nothing new happened: no presents, no inheritance, no beautiful women... you are happy because something has come to you from above, a spiritual element that really does not depend on you, like water which pours from the sky. For the majority of human beings, happiness is connected with possessions: houses, money, recognition, fame, or women, or children. No, true happiness does not depend on any object, any possession, or any person: it comes from above, and you are amazed to find this higher state of consciousness always there within you. You are in a state of delight, and you do not even know why. This is true happiness.
