Why do many people block their ears the moment they hear …

Why do many people block their ears the moment they hear someone talk of purity? They justify themselves by arguing that purity means narrow-mindedness, limitation, fanaticism and even exclusion, that people have been persecuted, massacred and burned in the name of purity. All that is true, but terrible crimes have also been committed in the name of love; does that stop them from saying the word ‘love’ and continuing to love? Consider a moment: is their reasoning honest? Just because the notion of purity has so often been misunderstood, they find any excuse to continue to dabble in filth. They are free. But one day they’ll see the effects of this mistaken way of thinking. Now, of course, you have to have a clear idea of what purity is and how you can purify yourself. To purify yourself, you must, first of all, be capable of discerning the nature of the movements of your inner life and be able to analyse your thoughts, feelings, desires and plans. And as these thoughts, feelings, desires and plans are often malicious and egotistical, you must then work to make them more disinterested, more generous, more fraternal.
