Goals and means - our tendency to confuse the two

Human beings have an appalling tendency to confuse the ends and the means. They know that there is always a goal to reach and the means to achieve it. But what they fail to see is that they are using all their highest faculties as the means to attain the most mundane goals. They are willing to sacrifice what is best in them – their intelligence, their integrity and their purity – to satisfy their lowest appetites. And they will even ask the Lord to help them with their schemes and foolishness. And do you think they have noticed this situation? Not a bit! They have never stopped to ask themselves, ‘What is it that I am trying to achieve? And what means am I using to do so?’ No, they need a Master to tell them, ‘Look at what your goal is old chap!’
