Jesus came to teach that no human being is to be oppressed by laws set down by a handful of people who, invoking their presumed superiority, assume the right to dictate how others should live. In his eyes, only the law of love is valid. This is why he even spoke against the sabbath, the law which forbade all forms of work on the seventh day of the week. This law was extremely rigid and went so far as to prohibit the hungry from gathering food. Not only did Jesus scandalize the Pharisees when he allowed his hungry disciples to gather a few ears of wheat on the sabbath, but he reproached them again, saying: ‘Go and learn what this means: “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.” If you knew you would not condemn the innocent.’ In the synagogue that same day, he healed a man with a withered hand, justifying his action by saying: ‘The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath.’
