By making school compulsory for all children, we have …

By making school compulsory for all children, we have certainly done a great deal for the evolution of humanity. But the exercise of intellectual faculties is highly inadequate if it is not accompanied by the development of moral qualities. And moral qualities are only developed when human beings learn to live collectively, in brotherhood. Unfortunately, the words collectivity and brotherhood do not appeal much to people, because they sense this would require them to make certain efforts, to be more open, more patient, as well as more clear-sighted and intelligent, which is more difficult than learning from books. In time, human beings will be obliged to understand the notion of a universal family and the beneficial role it plays, and they will wish for it. For a few years now, some political leaders have begun to accept this idea, realizing that only universal brotherhood can stop humanity from falling into the abyss towards which it is hurtling. Yes, the fear of world-wide destruction will soon force everyone to move toward brotherhood.
