The chemical formula H20 tells us that a molecule of water is made up of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen. Tradition associates hydrogen with the feminine principle, symbolized by water, and oxygen with the masculine principle, symbolized by fire. So, water, the feminine principle, is itself the result of the union of the two principles, the masculine and the feminine, with the feminine principle predominant. Can one not assume, then, that fire must itself be a combination of the masculine and feminine principles but with the masculine principle predominant? Water is a passive principle and fire an active principle. But the passive principle, water, is itself made up of two principles, one active and one passive. Thus, we find that water contains the original formula of creation: the two principles, masculine and feminine, which created the world. This is why we can say that water reveals to us the secrets of life.
