Like masculine and feminine, full and empty are two inseparable notions. Empty attracts full so that it may be filled and full seeks out empty to give it its fullness. Since the beginning of time this coming together of empty and full has created and maintained life. What is the conception of a child but the union of empty and full. What is nutrition but the entry of full (food) into empty (the stomach). And what is spiritual life? The fusion of empty (the human soul) and full (the Deity). The human soul is a virgin who must show herself to be empty, in other words receptive and humble, in order to attract the cosmic Spirit, who will fertilize her. Full and full reject one another. Humility is a kind of poverty, but it is also an asset because it makes it possible to attract the Deity. You must be empty, in other words humble towards the Lord to be filled with His plenitude. If you are full, bloated, arrogant, you will push Him away. In relation to fellow-human beings, however, it is different: you have to be full to help them.
