Human beings, like animals, must eat to live, but unlike animals, human beings can, through their greater awareness, find in their nourishment a way to develop mentally, spiritually and emotionally. And I would go even further : as long as human beings are not capable of giving the act of eating a greater and deeper dimension, it is pointless for them to claim to be civilized or cultured. That is my criterion. When human beings learn to eat with enlightened consciousness, filled with wonder at the food they eat, thinking with gratitude of how the entire universe has worked to produce the fruit, vegetables and grain which give them life – then, and only then, can we consider ourselves to be civilized and cultured.
