Many people pity those who lead a spiritual life. They say, …

Many people pity those who lead a spiritual life. They say, ‘My God, what a life! Praying, meditating, doing spiritual exercises – even fasting – instead of enjoying the pleasures of the world, the poor things, how awful!’ They do not realize that these people whom they pity have already experienced, in a recent or distant past, the kind of life that they find so desirable and have willingly abandoned it, having in fact discovered the existence of other realms. They have experienced other states of consciousness that have given them other kinds of happiness – sensations of fulfilment far vaster, more stable and more reliable than anything dreamed of by materialists. Since these are spiritual joys that materialists have not yet experienced, they have no right to pass judgement on them. Spiritualists have had the opportunity to compare, but materialists who have known only one kind of pleasure are in no position to judge. They are too eager to pity those who have chosen a spiritual way of life.
