There is a simple explanation: the former had extraordinary faith, great selflessness and very pure blood, whereas the latter allowed impurities to penetrate them. The purity of your thoughts and feelings, which the purity of the blood depends on, resists illness. But if evil has penetrated your thoughts, feelings and desires, the door is open and evil can easily descend all the way to the physical plane.
