You do not especially enjoy hearing someone talk about …

You do not especially enjoy hearing someone talk about self-mastery when everyone around you is clamouring for sexual freedom and justifying these demands with seemingly valid arguments. It is understandable that you do not want to be deprived of your pleasures, but at least try to see what advantages you might gain by renouncing some of them. It isn’t a question of depriving yourself to the extent that you have nothing left and find yourself in a void; it is a matter of understanding that it is better to replace certain crude, material pleasures with others that are subtler and more spiritual. When doctors see that patients are ruining their health by consuming too much deli meat, sweets or alcohol, they do not advise them to stop eating. They know very well that the patients would not follow this advice; or worse still, if they did, they would die! So they advise them to replace these foods with healthier, lighter ones. Well, this is exactly what I am advising you to do, but in a different domain. I am not encouraging you to starve to death, but to eat a different kind of food.
