Symbolically, the numbers 3 and 4 speak to us of two worlds …
Symbolically, the numbers 3 and 4 speak to us of two worlds ruled by their own laws: 3, the spirit, forever moving and 4, inert matter. All of life throughout the universe can be summarized by this opposition between 3 and 4. Take the example of the zodiac. The zodiac forms an unalterable whole: the constellations travel through cosmic space but at the same pace; no one overtakes another. It is the planets that constantly form different figures. In this sense, the zodiac could be said to represent our body and the planets our spirit. In the same way, the organs of our physical body are in a fixed position whereas, inside, the blood, fluids and impulses of our nervous system never stop circulating. But it’s thought above all that possesses the faculty of movement: it is free, and space is wide open before it. In nature, as in man, matter remains matter and spirit remains spirit; you mustn’t confuse the two, but you must learn how one works on the other. Spirit, 3, works on 4, which is matter. When 3 and 4 are brought together they create 7, which represents a living creature in whom spirit and matter co-exist harmoniously.
