Feelings - why they vary

It can happen that you stop caring about a friend for whom you had a lot of affection, and you tend then to think it is because they have changed: they have lost something of what made you like them. Actually, it may be you who have lost an element that allowed you to appreciate them. That can sometimes happen with disciples, too, with regard to their master. When disciples are sincere and prompted by the desire to improve themselves, they see their master's light and wisdom. But when they have other interests, when they become lazy and neglect their spiritual exercises, they no longer see their master in the same light. So you have to be somewhat perceptive to understand the reason for the changes you think you see around you. Very often, you claim that other people are no longer what they once were, but first you should look at yourself, and you may discover that the changes that have taken place are in you.
