Failings - like qualities, must be placed in the service of an ideal

Everyone will tell you that qualities are better than failings, and virtues better than vices. But the truth is that qualities and virtues do not of themselves have an absolute value. Many people have good qualities, but what do they do with them? Nothing, or not much. Whereas others have serious failings but are aware of them and want to improve, so by working on themselves every day they are later able to accomplish great things and do much good. If they did not have those failings, they might not do anything. It is easy to see that there are people who, by working on their failings, achieve great accomplishments; whereas others, content with the qualities they have, take life easy. Well, you should know that heaven does not care in the slightest what qualities or failings we have. It looks only at what we are trying to achieve with what we have and with what is lacking in us. The only thing that matters to heaven is what we do with what we are, the work we do on ourselves to place our failings as well as our qualities in the service of a grand purpose.
