By means of our five senses, we communicate with the outer …

By means of our five senses, we communicate with the outer world and are able to act upon it, and conversely the sense organs act as doors through which the outer world is able to reach our soul. That is why it is so important to be careful about what enters us in this way. Let’s just take the example of music. Who knows the profound influence sounds have on the inner life of human beings? Humans expose their ears to any music whatsoever, without worrying about the effects it will have on them, and what a din you hear these days! So, be careful, and learn to work with music that will enrich your spiritual life. Once you sense that a piece of music purifies you, gives you greater clarity of mind, strengthens you and allows you to reconcile and unify the elements of your inner life, try to make full use of it. Sustain an uplifting image, insight or thought within your heart, mind and soul, and the music will be there to help you, to take you with it and sweep you heavenwards.
