‘Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’ - commentary

When Jesus said, ‘Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect’, did he really believe that we humans are capable of attaining the perfection of our heavenly Father? We cannot even imagine what he is; how can we think we will one day be able to attain his perfection? And yet, this is the ideal Jesus gave us, because it is the only one that can truly satisfy the yearning we carry within us for the absolute, the only one that can fulfil our life and give it meaning. A child resembles its father more or less, but in essence they must be the same, and since God is our Father we carry within us the seeds of his perfection. Whatever people’s religion, and even if they do not have one, there is nothing more important they can do for their growth than try to achieve the perfection of the Creator. They are all his sons and daughters, and this unattainable ideal ensures they will always be walking towards him.
