Standards - the need for references in our spiritual life

Human beings recognize that it is indispensable to have benchmarks and standards on the physical plane that no one can argue with. For years, for example, the Office of Weights and Measures in Sevres kept the standards that served as references for the whole world. Standards are always necessary, because if everyone decided as they pleased on the length of a metre or the weight of a kilogram, and so forth, it would be an indescribable mess. The appliances, machines and vehicles we use in our daily lives also need to be inspected from time to time – in some cases every day – to ensure that they are properly tuned. Just as there is an Office of Weights and Measures in Sevres, there is also a cosmic centre by which we must set our standards. The sacred books say that God created the universe by measure, number and weight. The whole of creation came from this divine House of Weights and Measures, so this is where we must go to check our inner instruments: our mind, heart and will. It is vital that we adjust our instruments to the divine standards every day – and not just once, but three, five, ten times a day.*
