It is because human beings are divided within themselves …

It is because human beings are divided within themselves that they meet with so many problems and failures. When the heart, intellect, will, stomach, sex organs and so on all pull in their own direction, people’s forces are dispersed. There is a story about an eagle, a fish, a mole and a crayfish who come together to move a heavy load: the mole tries to drag it underground, the fish tries to move it toward the river, the eagle tries to lift it into the sky and the shrimp tries to move it backwards… You can guess whether or not the load was moved! This is exactly what happens most of the time in man, because nothing is more difficult for him than to unify his various tendencies so that they act in concert. He may succeed from time to time, but it is rare! And yet it is this unification of all our faculties that brings us not only success, but real balance, power and peace.
