‘Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another’ - commentary

Jesus said, ‘Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace with one another.’ What is the relationship between salt and this peace that must reign between beings? In some countries, guests are welcomed with an offering of salt and bread. What is being implied here is the harmonious way men and women relate when they eat together. For people do not sit down at the same table to enter into conflict and settle old scores – even if that does sometimes happen! And what is the nature of this salt which allows us to live in peace with one another? In one of his talks, Master Peter Deunov said, ‘Only by means of salt, by means of the balance between your head and your heart, will you establish inner peace.’ So salt is the result of an inner harmony between the two principles – the masculine and the feminine, the head and the heart. It is thanks to this harmony between the two principles that we find peace, and once we live in peace in ourselves we can also live in peace with others.
